Development

In 2012, Ali began working on this project after Rockstar, once again working with A. R. Rahman and Ranbir Kapoor. The lead female role was rumored to be either Katrina Kaif or Anushka Sharma. However, Deepika Padukone was confirmed in September 2013. In an interview, Kapoor had revealed that the film was titled Window Seat, but later Ali stated it was only a working title and later on the title Tamasha was finalized.[6] As per reports, Ranbir Kapoor plays a free spirited person who wants everybody around him to be happy. He is a nomad, going out of his way to please people.[7] In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Padukone stated that her character is a fan of the French comic series, Asterix, which takes place in Corsica, France.[7] Her character in the film sets out on an adventure wherein she meets Kapoor's character.[7] They both explore the island and, along the way, they form a troupe of sorts to stage dramatic plays and also fall passionately in love.[7] The troupe is one of the reasons for the film's title Tamasha as it refers to the Shakespearean monologue, 'All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players'.[7] In August 2014, Padma Bhushan winner Teejan Bai was roped in to perform Pandavani and narrations of the Mahabharata for the film.[8]

Filming

Shooting of the film's first schedule began on July 9, 2014 in Corsica, France and was wrapped on July 30, 2014.[9]Several images and dance sequence of a song "Dil Ka Bayaan" sung by Mohit Chauhan were leaked in August 2014.[10]The second schedule of filming began in Shimla from December 1, 2014.[5] It will feature child actors essaying role of Kapoor and Padukone's childhood characters in an unknown flashback sequence.[11][12][13] Kapoor was observed sporting a countryside look and later went on to film scenes as a graduating student from Jaypee University of Information Technology.[5][14] Padukone will join the cast in the Delhi schedule, where, the filming will continue over a three months, starting from January 2015 onwards.[11][12]
